I have never seen a film by him. I think. Embarassed
Or rather I have, but wasn't aware. Only "Black Swan" though. Not that it isn't a good film, but... many people watched it. I think.

I could have added Gondry to the list. I only know one film by him, as far as I'm concerned, but I liked it a lot. I agree with most of the guys on the list. They're all good.

I think I only put Sofia Coppola at the top of my list because her films... This may sound a bit weird, but if I was a director, I'd be more like her than anything else I have ever seen. Or heard. I mean, come on, she directed film scenes I made up in my head, but she actually created the scenes. It's a very strange thing to realize. I mean, how often do you think "My films would be like that"? Not to degrade her. But it gives her some kind of... There are directors that never touch you in the slightest sense whatsoever, however famous they are. (I know the guys I am talking about. And it's not very easy. I can think of at least three right now. And they all happen to be men, how strange... ^^ Or not. Maybe that's what especially gets me. The guys that I don't really get either are very traditional in terms of... how they make the films. Or they are just... well... kind of cold. If that makes sense..)

You definitely MUST watch AT LEAST Requiem For A Dream and The Fountain. A lot of filmmakers try to use things other than the actors to create emotional intensity (like composition, mise-en-scene, etc), but no person has ever been quite as successful as Aronofsky. It's almost like everything about every shot has stemmed from the emotional situation of the character involved. It's really hard to properly put into words what I mean... but man, can this guy do intense!

I completely understand! I'm in the same situation with Wes Anderson, to be honest. It's the reason why I didn't put him on my list. I feel a certain bitterness towards him because he's made the kind of films that I always thought I would make, and he's done it with such finesse that I literally could not attempt it (what I'd consider to be my own style) without being deemed a mimick.

In regards to Sofia Coppola, I do admire her films, but I kind of dislike her. She got lucky. If my dad was a rich film director, maybe I would be too. I'm not saying she isn't talented. She captures moments really well.

I think about this a lot. And even though it's easier in terms of getting started, I think it's a bit unfair. It's what I call the "Newman effect". (I just made that term up. ^^) I mean... Even if your father was head of 20th Century Fox' music department for twenty years and has composed the fanfare and scored 150 films, you can still be great without keeping his background in mind. It's easy to be annoyed by it and be jealous of all those lucky who got in, but then again we're lucky to be in the positions we are in, not having been born into nations of starvation, to homeless parents with diseases, etc etc. You can take it very far. "Being lucky" is a pretty vague term.

I cannot dislike someone simply because his or her father/mother/uncle or what you like was famous.

I don't think I'm a great fan of her father though. XD I don't know, he doesn't seem that appealing.

I love him for "My Own Private Idaho" alone, but the other films by him that I know are good, too, and I definitely want to check out the other films he did.

Gerry is the best, in my opinion. I always end up crying. Last Days is very good also.

Gerry is pretty intense. I find Last Days really hard to watch (probably because I've been a huge Nirvana fan for nearly ten years). It's a great film, but the connection to Cobain makes it difficult to watch.

My favourite Van Sant film is probably Elephant. I know that's the obvious one to choose, but there's something really special and unique about it. Perhaps it's my love for obscure structuring of time in films, or perhaps it's my love for the misunderstood villain in films. I also really enjoy Paranoid Park. He's captured the age of the characters perfectly. They're on the brink, just between childhood and adulthood. It's quite poignant. He's got a gift, that man.

However, I hated him for a long time due to his "remake" of Psycho.

Paranoid Park is simply awesome! That kid is such a good actor, he's incredible! Never seen Psycho or even Good Will Hunting.
