Sí, me pasa lo mismo. No es empatía, es que he pasado por esa situación. Lo mejor es que tanto mi vida virtual como la real es una mierda.
Como vivís en el norte, percibo un Spanglish en tu lenguaje cotidiano. Hago lo mismo a veces. Viví en Colorado. So... por favor nunca nunca nunca vuelvas a ese infierno. Here people are mean to me sometimes because I am the only white person in a store. Sometimes, people have been mean to me due the THEIR jealous nature.

I say, just keep being nice, and even nicer to the mean people - sometimes they come around. Don't let the haters keep you from smiling, enjoying this life. You are living for you, and you can take charge of your own attitude only. So, don't let the horrible things people say make you sad for yourself. Be only sad for them - they are the ones with the problem.

As for the only white person... Well as you should know that this "great melting pot" we call the USA...
This area, Tidewater, includes Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Hampton and Newport News...
In the past, Norfolk was a home for many freed slaves, and runaways could find shelter, a hiding place among them.
Now, there are many different heritages here due to the Military/Port. (Alot of Navy have married abroad then returned with foreign mates)

But surprisingly people tend to live, work, & shop in racially separate areas of these cities.

You will see downtown ghettos, next to luxury living, beach and resort travelers next to new welfare townhomes.

But still, I can go to a Mcdonald's where only black people work, or a shopping center with only asian stores and workers. White owned shopping centers for the ritzy, auto part stores in mainly black neighborhoods.

These places are for the most part ok to be & shop etc. for all people.

But I have been in some where my food has been left to get cold on the shelf, while others get theirs hand delivered to the table. I've been ignored while waiting at a register to buy some windshield wipers. "Cracker", "Sweetbread", etc are names heard in the wind as you pass.

Racism is alive and well in all communities. When you are the minority, the majority has the upper hand... Example:

Races in Portsmouth, VA (2009)

Black alone - 52,152 (50.7%)
White alone - 43,390 (42.2%)
Hispanic - 2,763 (2.7%)
Two or more races - 2,497 (2.4%)
Asian alone - 1,016 (1.0%)
American Indian alone - 389 (0.4%)
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone - 219 (0.2%)
Other race alone - 116 (0.1%)

Being different, whatever that may be, gives people the chance to ridicule, taunt, harrass etc.

But being kind, generous, thoughtful.. can overcome alot of this. I try to be overly nice to people, become friends, make that extra effort to say "hello" to the store workers, give other the right-of-way driving. Things like this. I can only control what I do. And at the end of the day - It's me I must be content with my own actions.

I did holler at a young "black" boy yesterday... He was walking thru the yard with 6 or 7 of his friends. I heard a clink, looked up, saw him throw a glass bottle at a large metal electrical box (trying to break to glass). I yelled Hey!, Hey! The boy said, "Huh?" I said, "If you break that, I will be the one to clean it up because we don't want glass in our feet." He said "Sorry". I said, "Thanks" as he walked on.... I would have done this no matter what color he was - It felt like I was talking to one of my own kids....
