The universe is ever expanding, there is no way that there is no other planet/solar system/galaxy whatever, that does not sustain life, it doesn't need to be a race as advanced/dominating as humans, but just vegetation even. The letter is more of a retirement announcement more than suicide.

I assume it was Courtney who wanted it done. Because there was a second letter written by him confirming it was retirement not suicide, but she burnt it so no one could prove it to the masses that she killed him.
